1199 Race Switches Alternatives

Hi there guys

I had a feeling that BSD switches are way to overpriced and decided to design and build my own.
So I have designed 3 models so far which will be direct plug and play with stock.

1. 2 button right handle bar engine run/stop and start
2. 3 button right handle bar switch. Third button is an ignition key replacement. The key is still there to make immobilizer work but it is hidden and that sweetspot in front of the tank is empty and instead the ignition is switched on by that extra button.
3. For left handle bar is a 4 button switch that copies all function of the stock switch except a horn and turn signals. Main idea is for a race bike but I can add road buttons options.

I am attaching 3d images of the switches.
I am going to order the cases machined from T60 aluminum with black anodizing and white text . For buttons there are two options either gold plated contacts or regular. Gold is considerably more expensive.
Final product will be smaller and better looking that BSD (i think).
Once I manufacture and test my prototypes I am thinking to make a small test production run of around 10 units of each switch. I am curious if people will be interested in the product. Mind you I will not sell anything that will not work.

Here are my manufacturing costs

1. 2 Button RH switch 120$
2. 3 Button RH switch 150$
3. 4 Button LH 180$

With cheaper Chinese buttons (same look and they work) take out 10$ per button they are that much cheaper. For example 4 button switch will be 40$ cheaper with chineese buttons.
BSD claims to use very high quality buttons so I sourced the most expensive buttons on the market (gold plated contacts) and they are 18$ piece. There is also 90 cent crap out there but I think the best solution is somewhere in between.

At the moment it will work for sure with all 1199s I do not have the wiring diagrams for other monocoque ducs. But the wiring I can adjust easily if the sequence is different. Everything will be machined and assembled in US.
Another option for body is plastic 3d printing. I am gonna try that too.

So please take a look at my designs. Any tips or advice is highly appreciated.

Wow, great work. "Except" for the price I do not see any further benefits compared to STM, BSD and EvoTech. I would be in if the LH would consist of 6 buttons, 5 in front (to the rider) and one in the back (like on the EvoTech unit).

Back button:
- Lap
Front buttons:
- Up
- Menue Up
- Confirm
- Menue Down
- Down

All buttons closing on push (non-bilateral)

RH unit is great if I could have it with normal pushbotton switches (non-bilateral) and not engraved

Great job you do!

Hi Gecko. Thx for thumbs up. Most of the buttons are momentary the only latching push buttons (that stays pushed in or out ) are the ignition and engine run. My main goal here is to make my own custom parts and make them smaller and more convenient for racing environment. So i put the lap button at the most obvious spot. But this is all personal preference and can be changed. So i ordered prototypes from 3d printed Glass filled nylon. Once they come in ill see how the wiring i have in mind fits and works exactly the way i imagine it in my stupid head and 3d app than will go to aluminum. Still i think this way will be cheaper than BSD or anybody else plus the idea of having them done custom appeals to me. Ill post pictures once the prototype is done.

If your willing to do up custom switches, i know i would be keen on one eg: 4 button right hand with 3 buttons at bottom, 1 at top ( cruise control setup).

That is definitely possible right handle bar with 3 buttons in any configuration. However for cruise control you will have to do wiring yourself. Obviously it has to be a latching button.

I'd certainly be in for a 4 button LH and 2 button RH!

I have the lh 4 button BSD and I'm disappointed by the height. The way I've positioned my aftermarket clipons, I need to angle the BSD get full manoeuvrability through my bars. Consider making the LH more compact and I'm in.

If you go with 3D printing, I'd suggest doing them in ABS plastic Geared extruder, fine layer resolution and finishing it with a acetone vapor treatmend would look mint

I have the BSD LH 4 button and Ducabike RH 2 button.

Honestly both are very good and the quality is great, from a functional point of view both work great and I'm not sure a lot can be improved on the esthetics as in my opinion they look good.

So I guess you then start to compete on price and any aftermarket issues which people might have which if presented right I'm sure you can grab some market share.

I'd be in for at least a RH switch. I had a BSD switch on my previous bike. Way overbuilt and ridiculously heavy for a pair of buttons. A 3D printed option would get my $$$.
