what's the difference other than suspension and wheels . I want to make sure I made the right decision . I will be swapping out suspension and wheels on the base .

The S model has auxiliary buttons on the handlebar that allows changes to DTC, DWC and EBC. It also has LED lights, and as mentioned the EC semi-active Ohlins front and rear. Not really worth mentioning but it also comes with the carbon fender for those that care.

Like I said, you made the right choice with the base as a race bike. I would've done the same because most of these options either don't matter or get swapped out.

I bought an S for the street. I can't imagine this thing on the track. I'm not even close to riding my track 600 to full potential.
Thanks from wilkson

Having never ridden an R, I'm talking out of my ass here, but I couldn't justify buying the 1299 base as an upgrade from the 1199R. Just my opinion.

I Ride: '99 m900 city, monster 1100 20th anniv., multistrada pike's peak, BMW r ninet and a 1299 Panigale S
I picked a 1299 s for pretty dedicated street riding. I had an 1199 base, which I loved, but it was totalled by a Ford F-250 in 2013.

The only thing I'm worried about, really, is the Ohlins EC -- will they be as good as the base Marzocchis, which I found to be amazing? I also wonder if the increased rake will cause the bike to be less stable...

Guess I'll find out for $27.5!

I ordered the 1299S and it will be my next race bike.

I went with the S because I wanted the lighter wheels. In Superstock trim, the Panigale is legal for 5 race classes. But if you change the wheels, that renders it illegal for SSTK and you have to race it in SBK classes...which would make it only legal in 3 classes. And I like to do a lot of races.

So with the S I can get the lighter wheels, but remain SS legal.

Chris, you'll end up riding one of the R1's on track with Yamaha Champion's Academy and you'll end up buying that too. It's like a huge, pyramid of bottled water in a convenience store, you just can't resist it!

(This is Stantheman from the wera forum, just had to poke you with a stick here, so to speak)

Haha you are probably right.

Me and Kyle have been good friends for several years; I am sure he will turn me on to the R1. And honestly, the only reason im going with the Duc is because it is legal for more classes. I have always loved Yamaha's (I still have my '06 R1).

That is surprising considering the additional displacement --I can only imagine what the four cylinder competition could be doing with an additional 100 cc's. I would have imagined this detail would have further limited the classes for which the 1299 is eligible, not vice versa. Honestly, I would have gone with the R for a dedicated multi-class race bike application, as the lighter internals, titanium conrods, adjustable swing arm, and mechanical suspension would likely be advantageous in that capacity.

Edit to add a couple links that may be useful to read through:
"S" to "R"?
Tracking the 1199 - NEED TO KNOW...

Moving up to an R isn't necessary by any means, but considering the amount of work you'll be putting this bike through, it could potentially save you a bit of money/hassle down the line while simultaneously offering a more versatile and competitive package.
Thanks from rja4z3
