Guess I'll find out for $27.5!
That's what I was worried about...guess I'll find out for at least $6k less On the street I doubt anyone except an expert could tell much of a difference

Honestly, I would have gone with the R for a dedicated multi-class race bike application, as the lighter internals, titanium conrods, adjustable swing arm, and mechanical suspension would likely be advantageous in that capacity.

Edit to add a couple links that may be useful to read through:
"S" to "R"?
Tracking the 1199 - NEED TO KNOW...

Moving up to an R isn't necessary by any means, but considering the amount of work you'll be putting this bike through, it could potentially save you a bit of money/hassle down the line while simultaneously offering a more versatile and competitive package.
US orgs are based on OEM displacement. So the 1299 is legal for all the same classes the 1199 is.

I will be able to race against all other Liter bikes (which will give me 3 classes). And my org also has a "Heavyweight Twins" category, which will give me 2 more classes.

I kicked around which bike I wanted for several weeks. At the end of the day, the motor differences are miniscule. In other words, it looks/sounds good on paper, but I honestly don't think I would jump on the R and immediately go 2 seconds faster.

Besides, we are kind of "splitting hairs" when measuring the performance between the 2 bikes. I mean, there isn't a single rider in the world who could honestly say a 1299S is "holding them back". If somebody can't podium with a package that has 200hp, 100lb/ft of torque, TC, WC, LC, Cornering ABS Clutchless Up/Down shifts and weighs under 400lbs in race trim...then they need to work on their racecraft and overall skillset.

In other words, if somebody finishes in 4th place and says "I could have podium'ed if I would have been on an R"...I will have to call bullshit. Haha

I wanted the updates that came with the 1299 and in all honesty, I want to try the electronic suspension. I haven't heard a lot of good things about it as it pertains to track riding in the past, but RRW had a lot of good things to say about the EL suspension on the 1299S. He said the suspension would stiffen under hard braking, then soften as the brakes were trailed off, allowing him to make the apex no matter how hard he charged the corner. I am fascinated by that and want to try it.

If I don't like it, then I will remove the EC stuff (or just run it in "Fixed" mode).

I Ride: 2015 Panigale 1299 Base
More than twice as many S models sold (compared to Base or R) - I wonder if that stat is true for global sales as a whole?

Good year for Ducati financially selling bikes that are $10k more than Jap counterparts (although far less of them), with a nice mark-up I'm sure

Some weeks ago, i ordered my base '17 1299 Panigale, then switched on the S, then on the base, and on the S again.

I still have a lot of difficulties knowing if the S is really worth it, +5000€ (France) for Leds wheels and Ohlins... Sounds like money that will get lost as soon as the bike will be in my hands, but as it's my first brand new bike, don't wanna go for something i regret.

Still have two weeks to decide before i take my decision though

Hi All,

I ordered a 2016 Panigale R and now I'm looking for a solution for the headlights: LED is the way to go and on a security's perspective, I don't understand why Ducati would drop LED technology to save 1/2 a kilogramm. Just dangerous and greedy.
Dangerous because they know over 90% of these bikes will stay on the streets and on the track, you just don't need them and greedy because the price didn't drop because of the missing LED headlights and electronic suspension. It does still cost 38,995.00 euros here in Vienna. At least on december 10th it did.

Sounds like you should have ordered a 1299S instead. Might be a better choice for you.

Some quick update, i finally chose to go for the 1299 Panigale S, you don't buy a brand new motorcycle everyday, and i had the possibility to go for the S (even the R) but the S definitely was the one for me there.
Thanks from Twistedracer

I Ride: '15 R and a Pikes Peak
Having had both, the R is an amazing machine, I love that bike, wouldn't get rid of it.... but... if I only had one bike I'd probably still have the 1299S, it's just that good. Although I say this because I haven't been able to ride my R on 2 weeks due to the weather
Thanks from ScrapperX, Twistedracer and Phil
