I Ride: the road
Question Thoughts on Buying a 796 or 820 Hyper

I've been eyeing up a Matte White 796, since I took delivery of my 1199 in April, which my dealer still has in stock.

Been offered a healthy discount on the 796, so am considering it.

Its gonna be a bit of a tool bike for running/fooling around on and I still like the original design and underseat exhausts.

I've ridden my brothers 696 Monster, which was super easy to ride and just about pokey enough for such a bike. 796 performance should be on par with that.

For me, the pro's of the 796 are:
- design and styling
- underseat exhaust
- lower seat 825mm, 65mm lower that new 820
- slightly lower weight, 4kg against SP, 8kg against standard
- price

Pro's of the 820:
- enhanced performance +29hp
- ABS, TC & Riding modes
- Nicer dash
- Newer model

Thing is, if I buy the 820 solely on performance grounds, I doubt its ever gonna impress compared to 1199 size thrills

Please let me know your thoughts

i rode the 796 before I bought the 1100 evo and couldn't bring myself to buying the smaller after the power delivery of the larger hyper. it wasn't that the 796 was doggy, but just felt it was too far backed off what what I felt was a more than useable 1100.

i think you answered the question in your 2nd to last sentence. why go for power when you you have the 1199 as your non utility?

i'll say this too... I had a far easier time selling the first chopper I built then i did selling my hyper... i miss it dearly. talk about a fun and easy to ride bike....

my only gripe (and it's obvious) is that with the upright positioning on the bike and being so "on top" of it, I found the bike to horrible at highway speeds in that you are blown all over the place.

i'm also one of the few that didn't have a single grip about the old dash. albeit a bit dated at this point, it does the job and if you don't compare it to your 1199 dash, you'll be fine.

one thing I'll add too. i did the full termi w/ the duc shop stacks and I wish I didn't. the bike ran rough at low to mid rmp range.

i like the idea of the newer liquid cooled version and to digress a bit, I'd prob more opt for the 796 considering what your plan is for usage. hope this helps ya a bit.

components on the 796 are pretty bargain basement, doesn't have the cool factor of the 1100. I looked at both very carefully for some time and just in terms of that I never would've considered the 796. A huge thing is the rider and passenger footpegs are all on the same frame, looks kinda chintzy.

Personally I'd go after a leftover 1100 EVO before I'd go for the 820. If I went for any of the 820s it'd be the top line one, and I am considering it. But then for your purposes the 820 hyperstrada with sidebags might be ideal for you in around town type use. But I'm getting an mts GT in march so an 820 if at all wont' happen for me til 14.

One thing to note, the 820 series doesn't have nearly as clean a line as the 1100 hyper. because of all the plumbing for rad and such.
