Ducati Monster 1200 Tour was in town on Monday - Pics

Neat looking bike. In some respects I prefer the looks of the last air-cooled version. I'd like to add a more comfortable, but still very capable street sporty bike, but I'm torn between this and a MV Agusta Rivale or Dragster. I'm leaning more towards the MV offerings, because they're 50 pounds lighter and the 800 triple is simply awesome after test-riding the F3 800 last month.

It looks nice and has been getting fantastic reviews. I think Ducati hit a home run with this model.

I want one. I wanted to go and see it but I didn't because I knew I would put a deposit on one and then try to explain it my wife. Every time I walk into the dealership...it gets dangerous.

Jeff, did you have an opportunity to sit on it? If so, how did it feel? The only consistent complaint I've been seeing is regarding the rearset and passenger peg setup cramping foot space.

Yes, I did sit on it. It was exactly as Wes Siler described in his RideApart review at the launch - if you have over size 10 US feet you will be pigeon-toed on the pegs if you're riding on the balls of your feet, because the passenger pegs jutting out are part of the frame and can't be removed without removing the rider pegs. One of those niggling Ducati-isms of design, I guess.

It had the seat in its lowest adjustment position, which the factory guy said is one inch lower than the taller position. It was a bit too low for me (6-foot, 30-inch inseam). He further said that there are accessory seat options (imagine that) that could lower it another full inch.

The tank looks huge but only holds 4.6 gallons. It is nicely scalloped though and your legs fit nicely against it. The riding position, at least compared to the Panigale, feels like I could cross the country with it. Suspension felt very plush as well just bouncing on it.

The dealer also has Triumph, and after looking at this and comparing the S-model prices and features, the Speed Triple R may be a better option, IMHO. The Triumph has better Ohlins as standard and even has the PVM wheels for $500 more. I know I would change the exhaust on either bike and if you've ever heard a Triumph triple with Arrows, you know which one to choose based on that. Practically, there are leftover 2013 Speed Triple Rs that you could get a good deal on, while good luck getting any deal on the Monster 1200 S for at least a year.

I'd have to ride both back to back and against the aforementioned MV Dragster/Rivale 800's when it comes time to buy though. It's a great time to be a motorcyclist - rumors of the industry's demise have been greatly exaggerated!

I'm a bit surprised they're not touring the S model. Many thanks for the review. There are indeed many great options available for this segment and you certainly can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned.

I was also surprised. The factory guy said there are currently only two S models in the country. One is on the road with the International Motorcycle Shows, and the other is in California doing other promotional tours.

Deliveries to dealers are supposedly in late March/April.

I sat on both the Ducati Monster 1200 and the KTM 1290 R. For me... looks, money, power, torque, comfort, its the KTM all the way.

No idea what was said, but this review has a great intro and features some really nice action shots.
