Epic Italy trip to Mugello and Imola!

Just returned from ten days in Italy with two days at Imola and three at Mugello and a summer holiday in the middle. Both tracks were the best we have been two, amazing places.

Imola - Me on the bike in front being chased by an S1000RR.

Mugello - Getting a tow from an S1000RR!

I did a lot of sparring with the BMW S1000RR on this trip and it confirmed my thoughts from owning both the BMW and the Panigale 1199R. The BMW pulls away on the staights due to very strong midrange, but also due to incorrect gearing on the R, I could have done with having the longer stock 1199S gearing at both tracks. I could consistently gain back the time on the braking and going through technical sections where the Panigale lightness really shows. The BMW has the same calipers as the Pani but the different in performance is night and day.
Thanks from Phl, gramps, youngR and 4 others

Nice ! Looks like you had his measure around Imola . I did Mugello this time last year , on a rental Suzuki 600 though . Been to Imola but not on track . I need to get multiple days on Mugello , that's an awesome track. I have 4 days this week at Phillip Island, practice , 2 race days and a ride day with a mate , cant wait . You'll have to bucket list P.I. next !
Thanks from Thamer

Philip Island is right up there on my list of bucket list tracks, I'd love to do it

I had the slight advantage at Imola as I was better on the brakes than the guy on the BMW. He'd been to Mugello before so it took me a while to get up to speed there as it's all very fast sweeping corners and the massive straight, a bit like Philip Island I guess?

I want to do Mugello next year with the DRE. How was driving to the track? Easy to find?

You really have that R working through the corners, you just need to get it "handling" better down the straights. Thanks for the videos!

If you look at Google it has the track in the wrong place so you have to select the track entrance to get correct directions. It's otherwise easy to find and well sign posted.

One thing I should have tried is the older 1199 swingarm setting as the newer 1299 setting accounts for a bit more wheel spin and pumping from poor surfaces. I reckon the higher setting might have had better drive. I think my steering is also slightly out of line as I had already corrected it the week before.
